BLACK LIGHTNING: Fox Orders Pilot For Superhero Series

Black Lightning Comic

Fox puts in a pilot order for Black Lightning. The network will carry the proposed DC Comics series from executive producer Greg Berlanti should they pick the finished product up.

Berlanti, of course, is known to many as the creative mind behind Arrow, The Flash, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Although all of these programs currently air on The CW, Black Lightning will not be the first DC television property to be carried by Fox. Prior to today’s pilot order, the network teamed with DC Entertainment to produce Gotham and Lucifer.

The program will mark the first time, however, that Black Lightning is portrayed in a live-action DC Comics production on either the big screen or the small screen:

Black Lightning, created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden, made his first appearance in 1977’s “Black Lightning” #1. The story follows Jefferson Pierce, a former Olympian, who was secretly born with the ability to create and manipulate electromagnetic fields. Although he had abandoned his hometown in Metropolis’ Suicide Slum after the murder of his father, Pierce returns there with his wife and daughter, taking a job as a high school principal. It is after losing one of his students to the gang violence that threatens the city that Pierce decides to take advantage of his powers. Adopting the identity Black Lightning, he becomes a costumed superhero who goes on to serve as team member of both the Outsiders and the Justice League.
