The Bottom Line: January 27, 2016: The Final RESIDENT EVIL… Until The Next One

Milla Jovovich Resident Evil The Final Chapter 03

The Bottom Line: January 27, 2016

Quick Takes – Matthew McConaughey, a talking dog, and the last entry in a long-running series go head-to-head. Find out what you should go see in this week’s edition of The Bottom Line!

Box Office Top Five

Split did huge business for its small budget, taking in $40.1 million to open in first place. xXx: Return of Xander Cage managed to get second with about half of that at $20.2 million. Hidden Figures dropped to number three with $15.8 million while Sing took fourth with $9.1 million. La La Land rounded out the top five with $8.5 million.

Here is a look at a few films that are opening on January 20th.

Gold (R) 120 mins.

Originally positioned to win some Oscars, Gold looks to be suffering a January-dumping-ground fate. Reviews are weak and there’s been very little marketing for this one. The only thing it seems to have going for it is a unique Matthew McConaughey performance, but it looks like that won’t be enough for moviegoers.

A Dog’s Purpose (PG) 120 mins.

The treacly, sentimental, pandering story about dogs for people with dogs, A Dog’s Purpose seems like it should do well at the box office. But after the recent controversy involving leaked video of what appeared to be animal abuse on set, the film’s box office prospects aren’t so sure. For the record, I thought it looked bad before that video hit.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (R) 106 mins.

When a movie calls itself The Final Chapter, is it ever actually the final chapter? That’s what Resident Evil fans will find out this weekend as the sixth and supposedly last film in the series hits theaters. Expect this to win the weekend – the series has always been a reliable performer and this being marketed as the last one may make it more of an event for fans.

The Bottom Line

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will open in first place. Split will drop to second while Hidden Figures stays in third. xXx will drop to fourth place and the top five will round out with A Dog’s Purpose.
