The Bottom Line: January 6, 2016

Quick Takes – The Lycans go to war with NASA in the first weekend of the new year. Find out how they will do in this week’s edition of The Bottom Line!

Box Office Top Five

Obviously, Rogue One has been dominating the box office for the past few weeks, and this week was no different, taking in $49.5 million. Illumination Entertainment’s Sing nearly beat it though, with $41.5 million for second. The Chris Pratt/Jennifer Lawrence vehicle Passengers took third with $16.2 million. Disney’s Moana stayed strong in fourth place with $11 million, while Denzel Washington’s directorial debut Fences rounded out the top five with $10.2 million.

Here is a look at a few films that are opening on December 9th.

A Monster Calls (PG-13) 108 mins.

Liam Neeson stars as the titular calling monster in this adaptation of a popular fantasy novel. The trailer makes it look like Spielberg’s The BFG for a slightly older crowd, and reviews are strong. This could turn into a sleeper hit, and I think it stands poised to open in third place.

Hidden Figures (PG) 127 mins.

I have a strong feeling that Hidden Figures will do big business at the box office. It’s currently riding strong reviews and a big marketing push, and its positioned to score a few Oscar nominations, too. If any film is taking down Star Wars this week, Hidden Figures has the best shot at it, so I’ll be optimistic and say this opens at number one.

Underworld: Blood Wars (R) 91 mins.

The fifth installment of a series that has yet to produce any good movies, Underworld: Blood Wars looks to be the “January Dumping Ground” movie of 2017. If you like these movies, then I’m sure no review will deter you, and it will at least deliver more of what you like. These movies usually do decent business, but since the competition is strong this year, I’m placing this at number four.

The Bottom Line

Hidden Figures will hopefully cruise to number one, knocking Rogue One into second place. A Monster Calls will open in third, while Underworld: Blood Wars will open in fourth. Sing will round of the top five.
