The Bottom Line: June 16, 2017: Lightning McQueen Rides Again

Cars 3 Owen Wilson

The Bottom Line: June 16th, 2017

Pixar tries to go a little more serious with the third film in the Cars series. Find out how it will do in this week’s edition of The Bottom Line!

Box Office Top Five

Wonder Woman remained in first with a great $58.6 million. The Mummy opened at number two with $31.7 million. Captain Underpants took third with $12.2 million, while Pirates of the Caribbean 5 dropped to fourth with $10.8 million. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 rounded out the top five with $6.4 million.

A Closer Look at Some of this Week’s Films.

Cars 3 (G) 109 mins.

Die-hard Pixar fans aren’t big on the Cars films, but kids absolutely love them. The studio tries to placate both this time around with a more serious third film that echoes the original by going all Rocky III with it. These movies are mega-popular among the youngsters, so expect this to win the box office for the weekend.

All Eyez On Me (R) 140 mins.

This biopic of rap icon Tupac Shakur is getting pretty poor reviews across the board, but there’s definitely an audience for this film. The success and acclaim of Straight Outta Compton two years ago may get fans to the theater again for this one. Plus, a cool sidenote, the actor who played Notorious BIG in the 2009 film Notorious is reprising the role again here. I’ll say this opens at number three, just behind Wonder Woman.

Rough Night (R) 101 mins.

Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Ilana Glazer, Jillian Bell and Zoe Kravitz all star in this raunchy comedy about a bachelorette party gone wrong. That’s a phenomenal cast and the movie looks pretty funny, though it’s mostly getting mixed reviews. But there’s an appetite for female-fronted comedy films, such as last year’s Bad Moms. I’ll say this opens at number four, with the potential to keep making money for a long while.

The Bottom Line

Cars 3 will open at number one, while Wonder Woman will drop to second. All Eyez on Me and Rough Night will open at third and fourth, respectively. Captain Underpants will round out the top five.

Movies To Look Forward To:

Transformers: The Last Knight, The BeguiledThe Big Sick (June 23rd)
