The Bottom Line: October 28th, 2016: Disco Inferno

Tom Hanks Felicity Jones Inferno 02

Quick Takes

There’s only one wide release this weekend, but are audiences going to turn out for Inferno? Find out in this week’s edition of The Bottom Line!

Box Office Top Five

I severely underestimated Tyler Perry last week, as it looks like Boo! A Madea Halloween took first place with $28.6 million. My number one pick, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, came in at number two, with $22.9 million. Ouija: Origin of Evil took in $14.1 million to open in third. The Accountant dropped down to fourth place with $13.7 million, while The Girl on the Train rounded out the top five with $7.2 million.

Here is a look at a few films that are opening on September 30th.

Inferno (PG-13) 121 mins.

The only wide release this weekend is the new adaptation of Dan Brown’s Inferno. It’s the third film in the “Robert Langdon solves historical mysteries” series that began with The Da Vinci Code and continued with Angels and Demons. Tom Hanks returns as Langdon, Ron Howard returns to direct, and this one adds Felicity Jones to the mix. Like the previous two films, reviews have not been kind. It also feels like this film has missed its moment (it’s been seven years since the release of Angels and Demons, and I don’t think many people were clamoring for more). I don’t predict Inferno will set the box office on fire, but I’ll say it opens at number one just by virtue of being the only new release of the weekend.

 The Bottom Line

Inferno will take first place while everything else will essentially just move down a notch. Madea will take second place, Jack Reacher will be third, Ouija will be fourth, and The Accountant will round out the top five.

Movies To Look Forward To:

Doctor Strange, Trolls, Hacksaw Ridge (November 4th)
