Oh My God. Prom Night, the re-make that I thought would auto-bomb this weekend at the box office not only grabbed the Number One spot but racked up $22 Million. I am flabbergasted. Prom Night, which looked like a generic garbage fest, has single-handedly generated even more remakes than have already been slated. In addition, Prom Night has justified these remakes as a viable financial risk, no matter how many bombed before it (and there were a sh*t load) and will bomb after it. The other issue this box office occurrence raises in my mind and assuredly in others is: is this remake of Prom Night any good? Does this film really warrant a $22 Million take at the box office on its opening weekend? If it does, maybe I’ll see it in theaters. That is a monolithic maybe though. Street Kings, a movie that I thought might be Number One this weekend, opened in the Number Two spot with only $12 Million. I don’t think this bolds well for the fiscal box office success of this film. 21, Nim’s Island, Leatherheads, Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!, Smart People (the last major release of the weekend, premiered in Seventh place with $4.2 Million), The Ruins, Superhero Movie, and Drillbit Taylor rounded out the top ten respectively.
