Box Office: June 17-19, 2011: GREEN LANTERN, SUPER 8

Ryan Reynolds, Green Lantern, 2011

The jokey green suit didn’t soar. Green Lantern premiered in the Number One spot at the box office this weekend with $53.1 Million. This was below most people’s projected estimates for the film. I was one of the reason the film didn’t do better. I decided to skip its theatrical run, as I did Thor, and Redbox it. Super 8 was Second with $21.2 Million. Mr. Popper’s Penguins premiered in Third Place with $18.2 Million. X-Men: First Class was Fourth with $11.5 Million for $119.9 Million so far. The Hangover Part II was Fifth with $9.6 Million for $232.6 Million so far. Kung Fu Panda 2, Bridesmaids, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Midnight in Paris, and Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer rounded out the top ten respectively.

Green Lantern is a 2011 superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. The film stars Ryan Reynolds, [Angela Bassett, Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Robbins, Blake Lively, Geoffrey Rush, Dennis Haysbert, John Larroquette, and Mark Strong], with Martin Campbell directing a script by Greg Berlanti and comic book writers Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim, which was subsequently rewritten by Michael Goldenberg.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins is a live-action family comedy film and distributed by 20th Century Fox starring Jim Carrey, [Carla Gugino, Madeline Carroll, Angela Lansbury, Michael Keaton, Philip Baker Hall, and Dominic Chianese] based on the children’s book of the same name.
