Amazon in talks with Kevin Smith to produce a Buckaroo Banzai TV series. The two parties are reportedly close to finalizing a deal to adapt the cult classic science fiction film for the small screen.
Also involved in the negotiations is MGM, which will produce the program alongside Smith and Amazon. It is unknown how many episodes Amazon is committing to, although Smith has previously stated that he envisions at least two seasons.
The film on which the series will be based, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension, originally came out in 1984. Neither critics nor audiences appreciated it at the time of it’s release, but the movie has since developed a passionate following, including the Clerks director himself:
If final negotiations close in the next day or so, the deal could be one of many topics the never-short-for-words Smith addresses at his Comic-Con Hall H appearance Saturday. Since revealing that MGM gave a green light to his series pitch earlier this year, Smith has already said he’d like to see original star Peter Weller and cast members John Lithgow, Christopher Lloyd, and Jeff Goldblum show up in the TV adaptation of the movie directed by W.D. Richter and penned by Earl Mac Rauch. A longtime fan of the film, Smith has also said he sees the first season of any potential Buckaroo series as a new look at the plot of the pic, using a second season to take the story to new places.
