SyFy Channel‘s Caprica has been canceled. Thank the Gods. Caprica (2009) went off on a virtual reality tangent that it never came back from. I thought that VR would be an augment to the plotlines of the SciFi TV show not become the show. I wanted Battlestar Galactica not a watered down and censored The Matrix. They took the cool ghost in the machine concept and went no where with it.
The remaining first-run episodes are being removed from the programming schedule as of next Tuesday. The final five episodes of the season will be re-scheduled to air in early 2011 and will conclude the run of the series, the network said.
Mark Stern, Syfy’s executive vice president of original programming and co-head of content for Universal Cable Productions elaborated:
“We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for ‘Caprica’ and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series. Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, ‘Caprica’ has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”
No sh*t. The series started out with a lot of promise but I could see problems with its plot from the very beginning. I detailed them here: TV Review: Caprica: Season 1, Ep.1: Pilot. The mother and the teacher were played by two great actresses but only one was fully utilized. Atia of the Julii (Polly Walker) was severely under utilized. Give her the proper dialogue – as was seen in HBO’s Rome – and she will excel. She was never given that on Caprica. Goodbye Caprica, you will not be missed. Bring on Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome.
