CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR (2016): Nick Fury’s Absence Explained and His Return

Samuel L. Jackson Nick Fury

Nick Fury’s Absence in Captain America: Civil War Explained and His Future Role for MCU. A lot was going on in Captain America: Civil War, so not seeing Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) may have confused some people, but we now have a reason why that is.

Captain America: Civil War didn’t manage to address what happened to the former SHIELD director. He played a big role in forming the Avengers, and the last time we spotted him was in Avengers: Age of Ultron. So why was he not mentioned in this latest installment of the MCU? Well, screenwriting duo Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely shed some light on that when they spoke with the LA Times. “We called [Fury], but he let the line blink. Primarily it felt like one too many possible opinions,” Markus says. Perhaps it was a little more than just that, which Markus further explains:

We didn’t want him to take one side or the other, because that’s not his place in the universe. And then we didn’t want another, ‘Is he still with the government? Is he opposed to the government but supporting the government?’ It got to be the potential for a lot more polemic discussion that the movie did not have room for. He’s the guy who put it together. He’s been the sort of parent figure to the Avengers. Let the parent go away, and see if the kids can handle this. See if the kids can be who they’re supposed to be without that governing voice. Um… and they didn’t do that good of a job.

With that aside, we do expect to see Nick Fury soon before Avengers: Infinity War according to Kevin Feige. The writers were quick to tease what his role would be in the upcoming epic battle with Thanos. McFeely said, “I would think…Don’t you assume you’ll see everybody in the ‘Infinity Wars?'” Markus also added, “It’s probably all hands on deck.” Where do you think Nick Fury will end up next?
