Constantine to Return as Web Animated Series on CW Seed

John Constantine has come back from the dead as The CW has just announced that the DC Comics antihero will return as an animated series for the digital platform CW Seed. Previously cancelled on NBC after one season, Constantine returned in one episode of Arrow before getting picked up.

Actor Matt Ryan is expected to return to voice the DC hero in the new animated series. According to Deadline, there hasn’t been any word on whether some of the supporting cast would be coming back to reprise their roles. The new series will have six to seven episodes running for 10 minutes each. The show will join the likes of Vixen and upcoming series Freedom Fighters: The Ray. EP Greg Berlanti will be on board as one of the producers overseeing the new show. Co-creator David S. Goyer will also be involved in the new series.

Constantine first premiered on October 24th, 2014 and ended on February 13th, 2015 after showing all 13 episodes. It wasn’t long until the series was cancelled after getting low ratings. The show also attempted to get picked up by other networks until it was announced that no one wanted to pick up the series, ultimately ending the show’s chances. However, Matt Ryan was able to reprise his role on season four of Arrow and was widely praised by fans and critics for his appearance.

There aren’t any plans for Constantine to do any live-action appearances, but CW President Pedowitz said that the network would like to see him return since his first appearance “added dimension” to Arrow. CW Seed has already started airing all the episodes of Constantine, so it’s basically a perfect fit for the show to continue in it’s new home.
