Sony Pictures Plans to Make a Film Adaptation of Descender. Before it’s first issue releases in March, forthcoming comic book series Descender has already been optioned by Sony Pictures to become a feature film. It looks like Sony Pictures hopes to find a franchise potential for this project.
ComingSoon reported that Descender was in a bidding war for the film rights, which Sony Pictures Entertainment won. “It was a competitive situation for Descender, and we are thrilled that it ended with Sony Pictures acquiring the series,” said Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen, creators of the Image Comics property. “We know that their film translation will do justice to the original comics, and we are thrilled with their belief in the franchise potential.”
The space adventure follows a lifelike artificial boy named TIM-21 who is in search of a home in a universe where everyone either despises or fears him. The reason for this is because TIM-21 is special due to his machine DNA that is connected to the origin of robots. With robots annihilating entire planets, everyone will be going after TIM-21. A ragtag team of unlikely friends joins TIM-21 on a journey going from one planet to another to find a new home while foes at every turn are out to hunt him.
Author Lemire and comic artist Nguyen have been on The New York Times bestseller list for their work in Sweet Tooth, Trillium, American Vampire, and Essex County. The two men will be executive producers on the project with Josh Bratman. Oscar nominated producer Michael De Luca and Rachel O’Connor will manage the project with Sony Pictures.
