Hayley Atwell No Longer Interested In Playing Doctor Who

Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell says that she will no longer pursue the role of Doctor Who in the BBC series of the same name.

Back in 2015, Atwell made headlines when she announced that she was keen on playing the Doctor. The news was surprising to say the least, not only because of the fact that the character has been portrayed only by male actors for the duration of the franchise’s 50-year history but also because Peter Capaldi was already cast in said role. However, when it was revealed that Capaldi would retire from the program after its current season, many pondered if there was still a chance that the Cinderella actress would finally have a shot at the role.

Yet as Atwell shared at a convention panel in London, she has lost interest in the gig and suggested Phoebe Waller-Bridge of Fleabag fame for the role.

Per CBR.com, the source of this story:

“I don’t want to play it,” Atwell said. “No. It’s just not my thing, but I really respect it. I’m a big fan of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, though. She plays the lead in Fleabag. There were talks of her being the next Doctor, and she’s so funny and eccentric and unique; she’d be great. I can’t really see anyone other than her playing it.”

It’s worth noting that the most recent rumors, which point to Luke Treadaway (Fortitude) and Sacha Dhawan (Iron Fist) as frontrunners, contend the show’s producers are no longer wish to introduce a female Doctor.
