Kristen Stewart, Nicholas Hoult cast in Equals. Director Drake Doremus is in negotiations with Stewart and Hoult to inhabit the star crossed lovers in Equals, the futuristic love story he’s collaborating with on Nathan Parker; the award winning screenwriter of Moon.
While both Stewart and Hoult have experience playing romantic leads in science fiction film; we’re interested to see how much chemistry a vampire and zombie can have with one another. (Stewart is best known for the Twilight Saga and Hoult starred in Warm Bodies)
Romantic and Dystopian; two words I bet you never thought you’d hear together in the same sentence, but that’s what you’ll get with Doremus’ new film, Equals; a romantic adaptation of George Orwell‘s classic dystopian novel 1984.
Not much is known about the plot details of this reboot, but we can expect it to follow its source material. Like its predecessor, Nineteen Eighty-Four (which was released in 1984), Equals is expected to retell George Orwell’s novel of a totalitarian future society in which a man rebels by falling in love- an outlawed practice.
The young director is definitely broadening his horizons with this ambitious remake of the quintessential apocalyptic novel. Could Doremus be trying to cash in on the current Hollywood trend of dystopian love stories set up by the success of The Hunger Games series? Whether or not, we’ve got to give the plucky new director credit for such lofty aspirations. While Doremus is no stranger to stories that deal with romance; this film will be a departure for the director, dealing with a heavy science fiction theme. We’re curious to see how Doremus tackles the Genre.
Drake Doremus is definitely a budding filmmaker to watch for. Breaking out in 2011 with his heartbreaking Sundance Film Festival hit Like Crazy, the filmmaker has also been busy working on the film Breath In and a short film series, The Beauty Inside.
Shooting will kick off in early 2014. No news yet as to when it will premiere.
