Robert Rodriguez Slated To Helm Remake Of Escape From New York
Once Upon a Time in Mexico director Robert Rodriguez is set to serve as director of 20th Century Fox‘s remake of Escape From New York.
Released over 30 years ago, the original film was directed by Halloween director John Carpenter and starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken. A tough-as-nails former special forces operative, Plissken is approached by the US government about rescuing the president after his plane is shot down and he is trapped in New York, which has been converted into a giant, open-air prison. As if this wasn’t an intimidating task as it was, the mercenary is fit with a mechanism that will blow up should he fail, taking him with it.
A polarizing figure whose movies are as likely to astound viewers as they are to baffle viewers, Rodriguez will certainly bring a touch to the property that is very different from Carpenter’s.

The deal cements the relationship with Rodriguez and Fox; the director just helmed the studio’s Alita: Battle Angel, the film based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga graphic novels that was written by James Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis. Set in a 26th century dystopian future, the film follows the story of an amnesiac cyborg who, after being rescued from a scrap heap by a doctor, becomes a bounty hunter tracking down criminals.
