Thelma, 17 Bridges, Birds of Prey, and more have made recent film casting, screenwriting, and director news. These films come from movie studios primarily based in the United States and abroad. The castings, screenwriters, and directors are subject to change.

Birds of Prey

Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been cast as Helena Bertinelli / Huntress. There is no word yet on which version of Huntress will be in the film. “In her earliest appearances, Huntress was Helena Wayne, the daughter of Batman and Catwoman. During the ’80s, Huntress was re-imagined as Helena Bertinelli, the daughter of a mob boss. Helena became a brutal vigilante after the death of her family.”

Jurnee Smollett-Bell has been cast as Dinah Laurel Lance / Black Canary. “At first, she initially doesn’t possessed any powers but in the later stories she was best known as world-class martial arts artist with a superpower called canary cry.”

Christina Hodson wrote the screenplay for the film.

Birds of Prey will be released in U.S. theaters through Warner Bros. Pictures on February 7, 2020.

Thelma

Craig Gillespie has been selected to direct the remake of Joachim Trier’s 2017 Norwegian thriller. Christy Hall will be writing the screenplay for the FilmNation Entertainment film.

17 Bridges

J.K. Simmons, Sienna Miller, and Taylor Kitsch have been cast in the STX Films film.

These actors and actress join already cast Chadwick Boseman.

17 Bridges‘ plot synopsis: the film “follows a disgraced NYPD detective (Boseman) who, after being thrust into a citywide manhunt for a cop killer, is given a shot at redemption.”

Adam Mervis wrote the screenplay for the Brian Kirk-directed film.

Monster Hunter

Ron Perlman has been cast as Admiral, “the leader of the Hunter’s Crew.”

T.I. Harris has been cast as Link, “a sniper.”

These actors join already cast Milla Jovovich in the film.

Monster Hunter’s plot synopsis: “For every Monster, there is a Hero. An ordinary man in a dead end job discovers that he is actually the descendant of an ancient hero. He must travel to a mystical world to train to become a Monster Hunter before the mythical creatures from that world destroy ours.”

Paul W.S. Anderson will be directing the film.

Charlie’s Angels

Luis Gerardo Méndez has been cast as The Saint.

Jonathan Tucker has been cast in an unspecified role.

These actresses join previously cast Kristen Stewart, Elizabeth Banks, Ella Balinska, Patrick Stewart, and Naomi Scott.

Charle’s Angels‘ plot synopsis: “The reboot takes the detective agency premise of the original television series and turn-of-the-century movies and takes it global, with the detective Townsend Agency now a worldwide security and intelligence service that has teams around the planet. The movie will focus on one of those teams and the next generation of Angels.”

Doug Miro, Carlo Bernard, Jay Basu, and Elizabeth Banks wrote the screenplay for the Elizabeth Banks-directed film.

Charle’s Angels will be released in U.S. theaters through Columbia Pictures on September 27, 2019.

Call of the Wild

Karen Gillan has been cast as Mercedes.

Call of the Wild‘s plot synopsis: based on the novel by Jack London, “The plot centers on the trek of prospector John Thornton (Ford) across the Canadian Yukon during the [Klondike Gold Rush].”

This actress joins already cast Harrison Ford, Dan Stevens, Omar Sy, and Colin Woodell.

Michael Green is writing the screenplay for the Chris Sanders-directed film.

Call of the Wild will be released in U.S. theaters through 20th Century Fox on December 25, 2019.

The Eternals

Chloe Zhao has been selected to direct the Marvel film.

Matthew Firpo and Ryan Firpo are writing the screenplay for the film.

The Eternals’ comic book plot synopsis: “The Eternals…follows a race of ancient human beings created by the alien Celestials with the intention of them being the defenders of Earth against their destructive counterparts, the Deviants. The two groups went on to battle each other throughout history to see which would eventually become the ultimate race.”

Regarding the film version of The Eternals, “The story is reportedly centered around Sersi, a fourth generation member of the group born during the Hyborean Age who can manipulate cosmic energy to give her virtual immortality, invulnerability and molecular manipulation.”

Dry Run

Todd Haynes has been selected to direct the film.

Matthew Carnahan wrote the screenplay for the film.

Doctor Sleep

Emily Alyn Lind has been cast as Snakebite Andi, “who is a member of the nomadic psychic groups the True Knot who feed off the ‘steam’ of those children gifted with ‘the Shining’.”

In the Stephen King novel Doctor Sleep, Andi was the first member of the True Knot to be introduced. She was sexually abused by her father, leading her to develop a hatred of all men and subsequently become a lesbian without realizing it. She’s nicknamed Snakebite because of her snake tattoo. Andi has the ability to make people fall asleep through suggestion. She’s in a relationship with fellow True Knot member Silent Sarey.

This actor joins already cast Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson., Zahn McClarnon, Carl Lumbly, and Alex Essoe.

Doctor Sleep‘s plot synopsis: “Published 36 years after The Shining, Doctor Sleep follows an adult Danny Torrance (McGregor) from the original novel. Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.” There Dan meets Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival.”

Mike Flanagan is directing the film.

Doctor Sleep will be released in U.S. theaters through Warner Bros. on January 24, 2020.

Harriet

Vanessa Bell Calloway has been cast as Harriet Tubman’s mother.

Zackary Momoh has been cast as Harriet Tubman’s husband.

Deborah Ayorinde and Vondie Curtis-Hall have been cast in unspecified roles.

This actor and actresses join already cast Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles, and Clarke Peters.

Harriet Tubman‘s plot synopsis: “Harriet follows Tubman (Erivo) on her escape from slavery and subsequent missions to free dozens of slaves through the Underground Railroad in the face of growing pre-Civil War adversity.”

Kasi Lemmons and Gregory Allen Howard wrote the screenplay for the Kasi Lemmons-directed film.

Milk

Santiago Menghini has been selected to direct the feature length adaptation of his short film of the same name.

Milk‘s plot synopsis: “a teen with an overbearing mother who starts to realize reality might not be what it seems.”

Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski are writing the screenplay for the film.
