Little Amélie or the Character of Rain Review
Little Amélie or the Character of Rain (2025) Film Review, a movie directed by Liane-Cho Han Jin Kuang and Maïlys Vallade, written by Aude Py, Liane-Cho Han Jin Kuang and Maïlys Vallade and starring Loïse Charpentier, Victoria Grosbois, Yumi Fujimori, Cathy Cerda, Marc Arnaud, Laetitia Coryn, Isaac Schoumsky and Haylee Issembourg.
Directors Liane-Cho Han Jin Kuang and Maïlys Vallade’s delightfully complex Little Amélie or the Character of Rain features a story of a green-eyed girl named Amélie (voice of Loïse Charpentier) who is born into the world without much comprehension of what is really going on surrounding her. As the plot develops, she comes to terms with what it means to be human, and she learns that her pre-conceived notions of life are often not always accurate.
An earthquake makes Amélie function correctly after getting off to a very slow start in life, beginning it in a vegetative state. Her dad, Patrick (Marc Arnaud), enlists a nanny named Nishio-san (Victoria Grosbois) to help and she forms a very unique bond with Amélie that shapes both of their lives throughout the duration of the film. Grandma Claude (Cathy Cerda) also brings white chocolate to help Amélie thrive in her times of need. Though Amélie and her brother, André (Isaac Schoumsky), don’t see eye-to-eye at first, their own personal bond will grow in time.
A very funny bit has Amélie starting to speak with her first words humorously being vacuum cleaner as she watches it make everything on the floor disappear. When her grandma leaves, Amélie finds some solace in her relationship with Nishio-san who begins to read to her. There’s deep bonding displayed on-screen as Nishio-san has suffered a great deal of loss in life since her family members were victims of World War II.
Amélie is forced to grapple with the idea of death, and the film raises many important and relevant life situations that help Amélie grow as a young girl. When her brother saves her from drowning, Amélie starts to find a newfound respect for her sibling that she hadn’t noticed before.
Soon, the power of Nishio-san and Amélie’s bond is tested through a series of difficult events and Amélie discovers her mortality through visions and reasoning that comes with wisdom. Little Amélie or the Character of Rain is tough, smart and fierce, yet surprisingly sweet underneath its complicated characterizations. The idea of rain as a driving force in life is also displayed in such a way that is intriguing although the movie works best when it focuses on the bond between Amélie and Nishio-san who seem very different, but find in each other’s company, a true reason for being.
Little Amélie or the Character of Rain can be an existential classic when it wants to be with some heavy themes explored fluidly and uniquely. As Amélie learns she isn’t a God as she initially believes she could be, she becomes more and more in tune with the happiness, joys and sorrows that come with life. A death moves her towards a deeper understanding of making the most of every day of life.
This movie is very heartwarming, but it also conquers a lot of difficult subjects for an animated move. It doesn’t spare scenes of sensitivity and emotion even though the characters do have an edge to them which makes some of the realistic choices they make very challenging to watch. That being said, the movie has a lot of heart and its concept of exploring the trials and tribulations of life through the little character of Amélie is an inspired one.
Little Amélie or the Character of Rain is chock full of heavy-handed symbolism. Aesthetically, it is well-constructed and has a lot of images that signify much more than what they appear to upon first glance. This is the type of movie that will appeal to older kids and adults more than children despite the age of its young protagonist.
There are some flaws here. This film doesn’t always approach every subject it tackles with great sensitivity at first and Amélie is difficult to warm up to in the opening scenes of the movie. This film purposely and intentionally shows how the main characters grow through hardships which leads them to ultimately appreciate that life is short, yet substantial beyond a reasonable doubt.
Little Amélie or the Character of Rain will appeal to viewers looking for a deeper look inside the human condition. This film explores ideas of suffering and, on the flip side of the coin, enjoying the little things in life that make it something to be cherished. This tale goes back and forth between happy and sad scenes, but the film is ultimately uplifting and inspiring despite its several minor flaws.
