Why Did I Get Married Again? (2026) Film Review, a movie written and directed by Tyler Perry and starring Taraji P. Henson, Tyler Perry, Jill Scott, Michael Jai White, Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith, Sharon Leal, Laya DeLeon Hayes, Jaden Michael, Da’Vinchi, Lamman Rucker, Sydney Winbush, Armani Greer, Everett Osborne, Charles L. Smith II, Derrick A. King, Maya Vasser and Chandra Gaines.
Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again? is a reminder of just how tight a grasp Perry has on the concept of human relationships. Some of his characters are loud, some are soft-spoken, some are wild and others are just trying to get by. Thankfully, the movie knows that people are flawed in so many ways, so it doesn’t try to sugarcoat the institution of marriage. Instead, it teaches us to embrace our loved ones and accept them for the flawed people that they are, who try to do their best everyday to make the most out of their lives.
Taraji P. Henson plays Roselyn, a successful career woman who stops to take a picture with some fans at the airport. She is in love with a younger man, but hasn’t really told anyone yet as she heads to a family get-together that celebrates the fact that Marcus (Michael Jai White) and Angela (Tasha Smith) are marrying their daughter, Jasmine (Armani Greer, who is absolutely perfect in this role), off to Roselyn’s son, Wesley (Everett Osborne).
Tyler Perry and Sharon Leal co-star as Terry and Dianne. Perry gets to play in a humorous scene when he gets a $47,000 bill in a nightclub for the black sheep in the family, Mike (Richard T. Jones). Terry pays the bill to get out of the club, but Mike is a pain in the neck, to say the least. He has brought along a much younger woman with him to the festivities, who soon causes trouble when she tries to get with Angela’s son on an airplane.
Perry’s gift as a writer/director is in creating real human connections that reflect on the true meaning of life. This film gets to do a lot of that reflecting as the characters all seem to be at a crossroads in their lives. Jill Scott’s Sheila ends up confronting a key character about possible abuse, but the movie has a lot of surprises up its sleeve. Everything isn’t as simple as it appears on the surface. Characters are in emotional pain and put on a happy face in order to get along and maintain the status quo.
Mike has some of the film’s best scenes. He is a survivor who is wearing a toupee and everybody seems to notice he has more hair now than when he was younger. Mike is funny, and as played by Jones, he is, arguably, the most flawed character in Why Did I Get Married Again?. We still can respect him because he justifies his life choices, even if he seems to lie every now and then to himself to tell him things are better in his life than they may really be.
Henson projects the struggle her character must go through in order to deal with the fact that her younger lover arrives at the event when she had no idea he was coming. As the action moves to Italy, there is a lot of dramatic tension in the storyline, which is sprinkled with just the right amount of humor.
Perry knows when to laugh and when to get serious. Some of the story involves a character or two who had STIs in the past, and although that may feel like it’s a bit much, Perry is making viewers aware of the consequences of behaving like some of the male characters in the film.
Why Did I Get Married Again? benefits from a solid cast of characters. Besides the principal players, Lamman Rucker also shines as Troy, who wishes he got in on some family investments, which have led to a good deal for wealth for a couple of key characters in the film.
This is really Tasha Smith and Michael Jai White’s movie to own from beginning to end. White’s character, Marcus, is likable despite his flaws, but Smith really hits a home run as the very opinionated Angela, who speaks her mind freely even when her advice is sometimes unsolicited. Smith has the integrity to make this character work and never become annoying when it could have been just that in a lesser actress’s hands.
Why Did I Get Married Again? reminds us of the flawed nature of being human. There are some profound scenes towards the end before Perry throws in some hilarious bloopers, one of which has Perry lovingly scolding Henson for walking into a scene the wrong way. This movie won’t reinvent dramedies, but has so much heart that one can really appreciate the wisdom Perry shares on-screen through these lovable characters, who will grow on viewers by the time those end bloopers arrive on-screen. It’s a winner.
