George R.R. Martin Reveals That Upcoming Game Of Thrones Spin-Offs Are Prequels
Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin talks about what HBO has in store for the popular fantasy franchise.
Although the series is set to wrap up after next year’s seventh season, the network is far from ready to retire the massively-successful property. In fact, HBO has already drawn up plans for as many as four spin-off shows set in the world of Westeros. Naturally, Thrones fans have been beside themselves with excitement at the prospect of such a glut of additional programming, even as few details have been offered about said programming.
However, Martin took it upon himself to offer a hint at what viewers can expect. Flatly denying the possibility of any of the programs being sequels, the writer said that they will instead be prequels, although he said he preferred the term “successor show.”
Superherohype, the source of this story, quotes Martin as follows regarding the chance of production on the shows moving faster than the writing of the books:
“We’re not doing Dunk & Egg. Eventually, sure, I’d love that, and so would many of you. But I’ve only written and published three novellas to date, and there are at least seven or eight or ten more I want to write. We all know how slow I am, and how fast a television show can move. I don’t want to repeat what happened with GAME OF THRONES itself, where the show gets ahead of the books. When the day comes that I’ve finished telling all my tales of Dunk & Egg, then we’ll do a tv show about them… but that day is still a long ways off.’
