Neil Marshall Discusses His Ideas For The Planned Hellboy Reboot
Emmy Award-nominated Game of Thrones director Neil Marshall got candid about what viewers might be able to expect in the proposed Hellboy reboot.
With the last Hellboy film, The Golden Army, coming out in 2008 and ending on a cliffhanger regarding Liz Sherman being pregnant with the titular character’s child, fans have been clamoring for a follow-up for almost ten years now. Now, it seems like they will finally get a new movie, but unfortunately it will not be a sequel.
What Marshall did promise, however, is that the next film will make extensive use of practical effects, as opposed to computer-generated imagery. Speaking to ScreenRant‘s Post Mortem podcast, the director explained that he didn’t have anything against CGI but felt that it shouldn’t be used “when you can do it [for] real.”

“We’ve been granted permission to do it R-rated, which for me is just like taking the cuffs off,” Marshall continued. “It’s like, okay, so now we can just make the movie we want to make. It’s not like I’m going to force it to be R-rated, but if it happens to come out that way, just because of my own sensibilities, then fine. And nobody’s going to stop us. So, that’s the main [difference]. And I’m sure, obviously, the success of things like ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Logan’ have not hurt that cause. But, also, when you go back the original material, it is kind of bloody, so I’m going to embrace that.”
