Chad Stahelski Set To Helm Highlander: Apocryphal
Lionsgate has selected John Wick co-director Chad Stahelski to direct their long-awaited reboot of the Highlander movie series.
Coming a decade after the last entry in the franchise, the reboot – tentatively titled Highlander: Apocryphal – will mark the first time the series has graced the big screen in seventeen years. The last live-action Highlander film, 2007’s The Source, did not see theatrical release, although an animated film called The Search for Vengeance was released the same year to largely positive reviews. In any case, Apocryphal will be important in determining if the franchise continues or remains inert.
Attached to produce the movie are Peter Davis and Neal H. Moritz, with screenwriters yet to be identified for the project yet:
“I’ve been a huge fan of the original property since I saw it in high school,” Stahelski said. “Such great themes of immortality, love, and identity are all wrapped up in such colorful mythology. I can’t think of a better property that gives the opportunity to create interesting characters, mythic themes and action set pieces.”
In development since 2008, the last update came in 2014 when it was announced that director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan (The Huntsman: Winter’s War) was going to reboot the Highlander franchise with Tom Cruise potentially playing a role similar to Sean Connery’s immortal Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez.
