Thoughts on This Week’s In-home Releases

Blade Runner 2049 on DVD, Blu-ray, 4k Ultra, and Digital HD is the strongest release this week, and was one of my personal top five films of 2017.  Not only did it finally break the trend of bad sequels made decades after the original, it expanded upon the Blade Runner universe and gave us a strong continuation and conclusion to the arc of Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard.  Denis Villeneuve continues his hot streak and is one of the most promising directors to emerge in recent years, giving us a beautifully shot film that explored themes of identity, memory, purpose, and destiny.  Unfortunately, mainstream audiences did not come out in support of the film in the U.S. or abroad (which is not at all surprising, considering the original Blade Runner in 1983 went over the audiences heads and bombed upon release).  I have a strong feeling the sequel, much like the original, will be remembered long after and cement its status as a Sci-Fi classic, and its under-performing box office will be forgotten.

Happy Death Day, on the other hand, was a surprise success with audiences.  Taking the concept from Groundhog Day and building a horror movie around is quite simple, and it paid off.  I have not seen the film, but horror fans seemed to enjoy it.

The Snowman, starring Michael Fassbender, bombed at the box office and with critics, bringing in a paltry $43 million and receiving a 7% on Rotten TomatoesFassbender has enormous talent, as evidenced in X-Men, Shame, Inglorious Basterds to name a few, but recently cannot for his life find a decent story.  He needs to fire his current agent fast (his recent flops include Assassin’s Creed, Alien: Covenant, and The Counsellor).

Raw Deal seems interesting based on the premise, and the director (Anthony Mann) and may be worth a look for cinephiles.
