George Lucas Will Not Be Involved With Indiana Jones 5 Story
Indiana Jones executive producer George Lucas will have a greatly diminished role in the series’ next installment, Indiana Jones 5.
Aside from Star Wars, the action adventure franchise is Lucas’ most well-known creation, having collaborated with director and co-creator Steven Spielberg on the property since the first film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, was produced in 1981. Even as recently as 2008, Lucas contributed to Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the fourth film in the series and the first to be made in a nearly-twenty year gap.
According to screenwriter David Koepp, however, Lucas will not play as big a role as he did in previous entries in the series:
As Koepp revealed in an interview with Collider, “Indiana Jones” co-creator Lucas so far has not had any input on the film’s story. “He’s not, to my knowledge,” answered Koepp when asked if Lucas was involved. “I’ve had no contact with him.” For the previous “Indiana Jones” films, Lucas would come up with the story idea which would then be executed by Spielberg and a screenwriter.
Koepp said that he’s “deeply immersed” in writing the screenplay right now. When asked what the screenplay involves, he jokingly answered, “All I can say is that there’s lots of aliens and Indy dies at the end. Lots of hiding in lead-lined refrigerators, aliens, and he dies. Should go over very well.” Of course Koepp was joking about “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” there, a screenplay that he also wrote.
