The people behind-the-scenes of Runaways television series are Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.  They were behind TV shows The O.C. and Gossip Girl. Schwartz and Savage will serve as co-showrunners/writers on Runaways. The duo will also executive produce the TV series along with Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory of Marvel Television.

Runaways‘ plot synopsis: “After discovering their parents are super-villains in disguise, a group of teenagers band together to run away from their homes in order to atone for their parents’ actions and to discover the secrets of their origins.”

As the children of these evil-doers, they have inherited their powers.

More on Runways comic book series:

the series featured a group of six kids whose parents routinely met every year for a charity event. One year, the kids spy on their parents and learn they are “the Pride”, a criminal group of mob bosses, time-travelers, dark wizards, mad scientists, alien invaders and telepathic mutants. The kids steal weapons and resources from their parents

The dynamic between the parents and children is interesting but will Runaways have the grounded grit of Marvel’s other streaming series: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist? I believe Hulu choose to move forward with Runaways because the blood/gore factor would be far less than the aforementioned streaming TV series. This would make Runaways more marketable to a younger, PG-13 demographic.

The six main characters in Runaways run the gamut of superhero tropes:

Alex Wilder, a prodigy, leads the team while Nico Minoru learns she is a powerful witch, Karolina Dean discovers she is an alien, Gertrude Yorkes learns of her telepathic link to a dinosaur, Chase Stein steals his father’s futuristic gloves, while young Molly Hayes learns she is a mutant with incredible strength.
