Fede Alvarez Signs On To Helm Reboot Of Labyrinth
Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez is set to direct TriStar Pictures‘ planned remake of the 1980s’ Jim Henson fantasy film Labyrinth.
Prior to his work on Breathe, the Uruguayan director was known for his short films, making four before getting his first feature film gig. The film in question 2013’s Evil Dead, a remake of another cult classic 80’s property. Since then, he has also worked in television on El Rey’s From Dusk till Dawn: The Series, a small screen adaptation of the Robert Rodriguez movie series.
Originally released in 1986, the movie starred Jennifer Connelly and the late David Bowie in a magical adventure that saw Connelly traverse a festive yet dangerous landscape in order to save her baby sister from Bowie’s Goblin King.
Interestingly, Comingsoon.net, the source of this story, reports that contrary to earlier reports the film will not be a reboot but rather a continuation of sorts of the original:
While Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman was initially brought aboard to supply the screenplay, Alvarez is bringing in his Spider’s Web scribe Jay Basu (Monsters: Dark Continent) to co-write the film with him. The Labyrinth reboot will not be a remake, but it will take place within the same universe as the original film, making it possibly more of a spin-off than a sequel.
