The directorial feature debut of The Blacklist‘s Ryan Eggold, Literally, Right Before Aaron looks like it wears its awkwardness on its sleeve. Featuring Justin Long as one Adam, the trailer puts him in a series of cringeworthy exchanges and interactions that are bound to leave viewers guffawing as they clasp their heads in second-hand embarrassment. Immature and indecisive, Adam comes across as somebody who is unable to not only make his needs and viewpoints known but also to stand by them when he does. This is made clear right off the bat in the first scene when he proposes to his girlfriend only to backtrack immediately and declare the relationship before finally dropping the matter altogether.
Although the supporting cast is quite large, the trailer remains largely focused on Adam and seems to filter everything through his perspective, indicating that there will be a very introspective angle to the story. In that sense, it seems to evoke the films of Woody Allen, dealing as it does with a socially-awkward man wondering why he can’t get his relationships right.
Ryan Eggold‘s Literally, Right Before Aaron (2017) also stars Cobie Smulders, Dana Delany, Lea Thompson, Charlotte McKinney, Kristen Schaal, Briga Heelan, Ginger Gonzaga, John Cho, Peter Gallagher, Manu Intoraymi, Ryan Hansen, Luis Guzman, Charlene Yi, and Vella Lovell.
