The first movie trailer for Little Evil (2017) from Netflix.

While the film sub-genre of horror comedy is one of the most difficult to navigate – the possibility that such films will be too scary to be funny, too funny to be scary, or even worse, be too nothing to be anything at all – but the trailer for one of the latest such movies looks like it has found the right balance between these two disparate elements. From Eli Craig, Little Evil offers a humorous spin on the idea of the demonic child.

With Adam Scott as the lead, it’s hard to not think of Krampus, another genre-bender that successfully mixed scares and laughs together. For Little Evil, however, it looks like they’re erring more on the side of comedy this time around, with the trailer freely dissolving dramatic tension by cutting to funny moments and exchanges. This isn’t to say that it doesn’t look scary: on the contrary, it does a pretty good job of making us take the endlessly parodied premise seriously, or at least as seriously as a horror comedy allows. All in all, Little Evil looks like another win for Netflix.

Eli Craig‘s Little Evil (2017) also stars Evangeline LillyBridget Everett, Clancy Brown, Tyler Labine, Donald Faison, Chris D’EliaKyle Bornheimer, Anita Farmer Bergman, Kim Evans, Brad Williams, Sasha Craig, Brian Wolfman Black Bowman, Shawn Weston Thacker and Christopher Male.
