Marvel Television Being Closed and Consolidated Into Marvel Studios
The era of Marvel Television is coming to an end. At least on non-Disney+ streaming and TV stations. Marvel Studios has made the decision to close Marvel Television, layoff or reassign its personnel, and not actively develop any new TV shows.
The writing for this move by Marvel Studios was on the wall because of two prior occurrences: 1.) Executive Vice President, Head of Television Jeph Loeb, was set to leave the Marvel division and no successor has been assigned and 2.) the launch of Disney+ without Marvel Television being a part of its content generation.
In October 2019, Kevin Feige was assigned the title of Chief Creative Officer for Marvel Comics, Marvel Television, and Marvel Animation. This, in effect, gave Feige direct oversight over Loeb and the ability to veto any of Loeb’s decisions.
With the launch of Disney+, Marvel is going to be winding-down its TV shows on other networks and streaming services. We have already seen this with the cancellation of: Cloak & Dagger, Runaways, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones. Because of this state of affairs, Marvel Television has become an increasing unnecessary division at Marvel Studios.
One would think that Loeb and Marvel Television would still be valuable with the launch of Disney+ and its Marvel-based TV shows but that is not the case. WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, two Marvel-based, limited TV series, had been put under the direct oversight of Feige, not Loeb and Marvel Television, before Feige was named Chief Creative Officer.
“The Marvel TV projects that are currently in production will continue but any further development is being scrapped.” Those projects include: “the announced four animated series and the live-action Helstrom for Hulu and last season of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
Because of these TV shows, some people currently at Marvel Television will be retaining their jobs following their move to Marvel Studios. “Marvel TV’s SVP Current Programming and Production Karim Zreik and member of his team will join the Marvel Studios group to oversee the remaining Marvel TV shows already on the books and on the go.”
Those unable to make a lateral move to Marvel Studios are being laid off.
