McG No Longer Set To Direct Masters Of The Universe
Terminator: Salvation director McG has stepped down from helming duties on the upcoming adaptation of Masters of the Universe.
Born Joseph McGinty Nichol, the pseudonymous director got his start directing music videos, including ones for bands like Smash Mouth and The Offspring. His work caught the eye of Drew Barrymore, who brought him in to work on Charlie’s Angels. From there, he directed the sequel Full Throttle as well as films like We Are Marshall and This Means War.
Although he was originally slated to oversee the proposed Mattel franchise adaptation, McG left the project just a day after the production was given an official release date. No word has been offered on who might replace him, but it is known that screenwriter David Goyer is already working on a new draft of the screenplay.

Originally launched as a popular Mattel toy line in 1982, Masters of the Universe spawned several animated series (including the female-driven spinoff cartoon series, She-Ra: Princess of Power) along with a 1987 live-action film. Directed by Gary Goddard, the first Masters of the Universe movie stars Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, Frank Langella as Skeletor and, in one of her very first big screen roles, a young Courteney Cox as Julie Winston, a teenage character created specifically for the film.
