MOONFALL: Roland Emmerich To Helm Sci-Fi Disaster Film

Roland Emmerich Independence Day Resurgence

Roland Emmerich signs on as the director of Moonfall. The Independence Day: Resurgence and White House Down director will work on the science fiction film based on a script he co-wrote with Harald Kloser and Spencer Cohen.

The project will not be the first time Emmerich has worked with Kloser. In addition to serving as an executive producer on the director’s past films like 10,000 B.C., 2012, White House Down and the aforementioned Resurgence, Kloser contributed musical scores to the first two movies and worked on the scripts for the latter two. Reflecting this past partnership, the two men will also serve as producers on Moonfall. The project is still in the early stages of development, but is reported to be on the fast track for production:

Moonfall, likened in the initial report to a combination of 2012 and Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, follows “an unlikely band of misfits who must unite to save humanity when the moon falls out of orbit and hurtles towards earth.”

This Moonfall is not to be confused with another currently in-development project by the same name, a science fiction script by David Weil that made the 2014 Blacklist. That Moonfall has been described as a murder mystery in the vein of Fargo, set at an Earth colony on the moon. Although it’s been some time since we last heard anything about that film, Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Noah) was reportedly interested in directing.
