NASHVILLE: Series Moves to Hulu for Season 5

Nashville returns to Hulu through CMT. Fans were shocked when ABC canceled Nashville this year after its fourth season, and they were even further disappointed when the series finale ended on a cliffhanger. That series finale has become just a season four cliffhanger, though; the drama will, in fact, return for a fifth season.

Immediately after news of cancellation from ABC, Lionsgate began searching for new partners to ensure the show’s continuation. Said Lionsgate TV Group chairman Kevin Beggs, “In our estimation, to go with a quickly assembled too-easy wrap-up is more of a disservice to the fans who have invested four years in this great cast and these great stories. And there’s more stories to tell.” In other words, the show’s creators chose to end season 4 the way they did rather than wrap it up in the hope that the drama’s cancelation would not be final.

That gamble paid off, and CMT and Hulu have partnered to continue the stories of Connie BrittonHayden Panettiere, and friends. Thus, Nashville joins the ranks of shows like Community and The Mindy Project, which moved from network television channels to online streaming entities. What does Nashville‘s transition say about the network vs streaming war, or the future of content creation itself? Only time will tell.
