New York Comic Con 2025 – Day 2

For the first time this year, I wasn’t sure that I was going to be able to get into a panel on the standby line. The VIP line was robust, and a Comic Con worker continually alerted us of the limited seating available. It was a solo Sigourney Weaver panel, and Alien fans turned out in droves.

The events that unfolded on the Main Stage over the next 60 minutes were truly remarkable. While my seat was firmly behind an abnormally large pillar, there was nothing that could wipe the smile from my smiling face.

The panel was hosted by Josh Horowitz of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The question began at the beginning, Alien, where Sigourney discussed her theater background and working with the master Ridley Scott. It was sweet to hear how close she became with the late Sir Ian Holm, who actually terrorizes her in the film.

When asked about the ending of the now legendary movie, Weaver revealed that it was basically thought up on the spot. Scott didn’t know how to end the film and when the Xenomorph’s hand falls on Ripley’s shoulder in the escape pod, her reaction was completely genuine. It’s amazing how things just fall into place sometimes.

About halfway through the panel, Horowitz asked the difficult question of which film she preferred making. The consummate professional that she is, Weaver very elegantly hedged her bets between the two, proclaiming a strong affinity for both films for different reasons. But attendees could read between the lines when Weaver went on to glowingly discuss her role in the sequel after and even left the door open to return to the franchise.

Alien producer and Hollywood stalwart Walter Hill has apparently penned fifty fresh pages of story that Weaver absolutely loved. It was just the little nugget of hope that the hungry crowd wanted to walk away with.

At the start of the panel, Horowitz told the crowd that there would be a surprise at the end of the panel. Naively, I thought it would be another bag of candy like attendees got at the Mercy panel. Boy, was I wrong. After about 45 minutes, Horowitz introduced a surprise guest, Veronica Cartwright!

Cartwright played Lambert alongside Weaver in the original Alien film. She joined Horowitz and Weaver for the final fifteen minutes and talked about filming the infamous chest-burster scene and the beautiful sets built for the movie. It was a genuinely heartwarming reunion that gave the crowd more than they could have hoped for.

But for now, we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed that Walter Hill writes the rest of his Alien script.
