Steven S. DeKnight attached to Pacific Rim 2. The Spartacus and Marvel’s Daredevil writer will be replacing Guillermo Del Toro, who helmed the original film in 2013.
The news likely came as a surprise to many, as it was widely expected that Del Toro would return to direct the next installment of the franchise. He did, however, confirm that he will be involved in other ways with Pacific Rim 2, writing on Twitter that he plans for the series to “expand big”. The last movie he directed was 2015’s Crimson Peak.
While the movie has been green-lit by Universal Pictures, it’s production schedule seems to be up in the air. Previously, Pacific Rim 2 was set for release this year before the company postponed it until an unknown date. DeKnight’s addition to the team indicates that the project is moving forward however, so fans can breathe a sigh of relief.
Pacific Rim 2 was originally scheduled for release on April 7, 2017 before being pushed to August 4, 2017 and ultimately removed from the calendar altogether. In a statement, Universal declared they were “committed to having ‘Pacific Rim 2,’” but that the delay was needed so the “creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.” That seems to be exactly what is happening with the addition of Steven S DeKnight.
Pacific Rim hit theaters in summer 2013 and grossed just $101 million at the domestic box office but went on to take in over $400 million worldwide. The original film starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman.
