Judd Apatow To Produce Netflix Pee-wee Herman Movie. A new Pee-wee Herman movie is set to begin filming in 2015. There is currently no director attached and the film is set to be a Netflix exclusive but the most intriguing tid-bit associated with the film is that super producer Judd Apatow is set to produce the film.
Paul Reubens developed his Pee-wee Herman character with a darker, adult oriented persona before toning himself down in order to appeal to a younger and broader audience. I’m curious to see if Apatow will look to apply his successful brand of low borrow, man-child humour to the character in order to tap back into Pee-wee’s more “adult” roots.
The majority of Pee-wee Herman fans have grown into adults and movie studios know that re-treading familiar brands and tapping into nostalgia is the easiest way to make a quick buck. However, the work of Pee-wee Herman was recently released on Netflix and offering the character to today’s younger generation is affording the next film many demographics to market to.
