Powers Rangers Reboot To Feature Gay Character As Protagonist

The new Power Rangers movie will reportedly present Trini the Yellow Ranger as a lesbian in a first for blockbuster superhero films.

The revelation will be made in a small but no less “pivotal” moment as director Dean Israelite describes it: when Trini has troubles with her significant other, another character initially believes that she is having “boyfriend problems”. As the scene goes on, however, it becomes clear that it is actually “girlfriend problems” that have got Trini down.

Discussing the scene, Israelite explains that Trini, like many at her age, is “questioning” her identity and trying to find how she fits into the world, a struggle that will likely resonate particularly with young LGBT viewers. The point of the scene, the director continues, is that there are other people asking these same questions and, more importantly, that “That’s OK”.

CBR.com, the source of this story, shared the following about the film’s plot.

Opening Friday nationwide, the reboot of “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove — and the world — is on the verge of obliteration by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, they quickly discover they’re the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers.
