NBC Developing Half-Hour Comedy Based on RED. The RED films are getting the small screen treatment as NBC is working on developing a half-hour comedy series based on the DC series. This will be the second DC series for NBC in development after Powerless, another comedy series.
RED screenwriters Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber will executive produce the series along with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian. Deadline reported that the series would, “retain the core concept of the films but will be set in a more grounded and authentic world, focusing on the characters’ darkly hilarious struggles to survive civilian life as they simultaneously fight for and against the very organization that threw them out.”
Based on the comic book Retired Extremely Dangerous by Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer, the miniseries was adapted into the 2010 film starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, and Mary-Louis Parker. The film made a total of $200 million worldwide and was followed by a sequel in 2013, which made over $148 million at the box office. The films took a comedic approach to the serious tone of the series, which followed an older spy who is forced to fight back against the CIA and all it’s younger agents.
