Michael Keaton Talks About Playing Vulture In Spider-Man: Homecoming
Academy Award-nominated Birdman actor Michael Keaton opened up about portraying the villainous Vulture in Sony Pictures‘ upcoming superhero reboot Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Keaton, of course, has a much deeper connection to the role than simply playing a washed-up actor who became famous for playing a bird-themed superhero. He portrayed Bruce Wayne in Tim Burton‘s Batman, the 1989 blockbuster that forever changed the way audiences thought of the Caped Crusader and paved the way for the modern superhero film. In short, it is very fitting that he should play the villain in this latest comic-based escapade.
Speaking about his role, Keaton reveals that unlike the characters who typically dominate the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Vulture is “just a regular joe” who feels left behind in a world where demigods walk the Earth. It’s a motive that we haven’t really seen explored in the MCU, so it will be interesting to how Homecoming handles it.
Additionally, director Jon Watts offered his own thoughts on The Vulture, as Superherohype reports:
The director revealed he found inspiration for Vulture’s “ground-level perspective” in John C. Reilly’s supporting character in Guardians of the Galaxy.
“I like the idea that in these huge movies, you pick out one extra and you’re like, ‘What does he think of all this?’” Watts said. “Sometimes these movies are so casual about just destroying whole cities and incredible things happen and everyone’s like, ‘Eh, whatever.’ If that really happened, it would be amazing and change everything.”
