In an official statement, CBS announced that Star Trek is coming back to the small screen. The show will premiere on CBS, but the rest of the episodes will be released on their digital subscription service, CBS All Access. This will be the first original series for CBS All Access as it follows a similar format to other streaming services like Amazon Prime and Netflix. The new series will be produced and developed by Alex Kurtzman, who has worked on the films Star Trek and it’s sequel Star Trek Into Darkness.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kurtzman is searching for a head writer for the new TV series. The press release confirmed that this will not be a continuation from the current film series, but instead a separate TV feature with an all-new cast. Here’s what the official release states:
The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.
The upcoming Star Trek revival series will premiere in January 2017, just a few months after the franchise celebrates it’s 50th Anniversary next summer.
