STAR WARS (2018): Han Solo Spin-Off Film To Feature Chewbacca

Harrison Ford Star Wars

Chewbacca to appear in Star Wars spin-off movie. The planned film will focus on a young Han Solo and reveal how he met his beloved wookie wingman.

Details are scant about the currently-untitled project, but Disney has pegged it for release after Star Wars Episode VIII in 2018. In the meantime, fans will get to tide themselves over with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, another spin-off that predates the events of the original trilogy.

When the movie finally rolls around, viewers can expect to learn to how Chewbacca ended up flying on the Millennium Falcon alongside the laser gun-toting Han Solo. Given the status of the film as a prequel, it is doubtful that Harrison Ford will be appearing in the film, much less reprising his role. It is also unclear if Peter Mayhew will be returning to the screen as Chewbacca in this or other Star Wars movies:

Disney CEO Bob Iger had the following to say about this, as well as Rogue One‘s timeframe, while speaking at the Deutsche Bank 2016 Media, Internet & Telecom Conference:

“Rogue One … is about a band of rebels plotting to steal the plans to the Death Star. It takes place right before George Lucas‘s first film, which came out in 1977 and is now called ‘A New Hope.’ We have others in the works, including one, which is an origin story about Han Solo and Chewy, and that’ll come after ‘Star Wars 8’ in 2018. And then there will possibly be more thereafter.”
