Disney pushes Star Wars: Episode VIII release date back. The next installment of the science fiction franchise will play in theaters seven months after it’s original release date of May 26th, 2017.
Fans will have to wait until Christmas time next year for the highly-anticipated follow-up to Star Wars: Episode VII. That film broke multiple records and hauled in a staggering amount of cash, a precedent that Disney will undoubtedly try to replicate with Episode VIII. According to Superherohype:
The move to have Episode VIII delayed follows the extraordinary success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was the first Star Wars movie to premiere in December. In the popular holiday moviegoing corridor, it smashed numerous records, including biggest domestic and global debuts of all time as well as the biggest domestic second and third weekends, en route to becoming the highest-grossing domestic release of all time with over $861 million and the third-biggest global release ever with $1.887 billion.
Written and directed by Johnson, Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently in pre-production and will begin principal photography in London next month. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman will produce and J.J. Abrams, Tom Karnowski, and Jason McGatlin will executive produce.
Apparently, Disney opted to replace the delayed Star Wars movie with an entry from another of it’s lucrative franchises. In lieu of Star Wars: Episode VIII, audiences will be able to see Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in May next year. That film will be the fifth in the company’s blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean series and is set for Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, and Orlando Bloom to reprise the roles they originated in those movies.
