M. Night Shyamalan Wants To Direct For Netflix’s Stranger Things
The Sixth Sense director M. Night Shyamalan has expressed interest in working on the second season of Netflix’s original science fiction drama Stranger Things.
While Shyamalan is no stranger to the world of television (he created the mystery series Wayward Pines for Fox), he is primarily known for his work on feature films. Some big credits on his resume are Unbreakable, Signs, The Happening, and Avatar: The Last Airbender, the last of which was based on the Nickelodeon anime series of the same name. That film proved to be very unpopular with both critics and fans, with many complaining that it deviated too much from the source material.
Regarding Stranger Things however, the director noted that the show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, were involved on Pines and directed episodes for it. Now that they have their own sci-fi show, Shyamalan is hopeful that they will return the favor and allow him to direct an installment or two.
At the same time, Shyamalan is pondering the possibility of reviving Tales from the Crypt, as CBR.com reports:
“I really want to do [‘Tales from the Crypt’] and hopefully I still will, but it’s hugely complicated,” said Shyamalan. “It’s particularly difficult because of the rights issues. There are so many estates involved and people involved from the original… I love the comics [which inspired the original series] — that show was a big deal to me… it was taboo, it was like porn! In my immigrant house, I had to go to my friend’s house to watch ‘Tales from the Crypt,’ so it represented a huge thing for me.”
