Supergirl’s James Olsen Will Become The Guardian

Supergirl character James Olsen is set to turn into DC hero The Guardian at some point in The CW program’s near future.

The announcement was made by executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, who said that Mehcad Brooks’ character will grow fed up with being Kara’s sidekick and decide to take matters into his own hands. Needless to say, this will cause major problems in his relationship with her, especially because he will keep his alter ego a secret from her:

Originally created by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, the original Guardian was Jim Harper, a police officer assigned to Metropolis’s Suicide Slum. Tired of seeing criminals evading justice, he took on the role of a costumed vigilante. With the aid of the Newsboy Legion, he took on criminals with his fists and a badge-shaped shield.

Though it is unclear if the Newsboy Legion will appear, Kreisberg said James’ Guardian will use the character’s shield.

The Jim Harper Guardian does have ties to the Cadmus Project, with his original Newsboys becoming the project’s original founders. But it is unknown if that detail will find its way into the origins of “Supergirl’s” Cadmus. Later incarnations of the hero included former Teen Titan Mal Duncan, who utilized an exoskeleton to provide him with super strength, and Jake Jordan, who was actually known as the Manhattan Guardian. Unlike Harper, both of those characters are Black rather than Caucasian.
