One entertainament journalist’s retelling of the events in the trailer (spoilers):

The trailer begins in future 2029, and we get a look at post apocalyptic Los Angeles intercut with Jason Clarke as John Connor giving an inspiring speech to his group of resistant fighters staring at an end of the world scenario. John Conner’s second in command, Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney), offers to go back in time to protect John’s mother Sarah Conner from Terminators sent back by Skynet. This all isn’t much different than the beginning of James Cameron‘s original 1984 film The Terminator, albeit this retelling has much bigger special effects.

But once back in time in the year 1984, things get… different.

First we see a T-1000, then Sarah Connor (played this time by Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke) makes the save, giving a delivery of the popular franchise catchphrase “some with me if you want to live!” And then the realization that the T-800 from the original Terminator has already been destroyed, thanks to an older looking T-800 (again played by Arnold Schwarzenegger).

What many people may not realize is that the time travel segment shown in this trailer is almost exactly the time travel segment that James Cameron wrote for T2: Judgement Day but couldn’t (and never filmed) because of its cost. I read that unfilmed script segment years ago and it was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the hanging Terminators near the time displacement equipment.

It’s cool that they used it but uncool how it’s been altered and aggrandized (think Wolverine’s adamantium tub in X-Men 2 versus the same tub in X-Men Origins: Wolverine). Like I said, at least they used it (with Cameron’s blessing I assume) but it would have been better and looked better if he had.

Terminator Genisys‘ also stars Dayo Okeniyi, Byung Hun Lee, Gregory Alan Williams, Bryant Prince, Teri Wyble, Courtney B. Vance, Michael Gladis, Sandrine Holt, Matt Smith, and Aaron V. Williamson.
