The Coen Brothers To Make The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs
Academy Award-winning No Country for Old Men directors Joel and Ethan Coen will produce and direct original TV miniseries The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
Renowned for their prolific output, the Coen brothers are renowned for their dark, subversive forays into numerous genres over the course of their nearly 30 year career. Among the many titles under their belt are such varied films as Raising Arizona, Barton Fink, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and Burn After Reading, with their most recent offering being last year’s Hail, Caesar! Their work has for the most part been warmly received, with the duo earning 13 Academy Award nominations in total and winning four for the aforementioned Fargo and No Country.
Now, it seems that the two are ready to go where they haven’t ventured before: television. Returning to grounds they explored in their remake of True Grit, the writing-and-directing team plans to make an anthology series set in the Wild West. Little is known about the project and no network has been attached to the series, but it will be interesting to see how well the Coens’ unique sensibilities translate to the small screen.
Variety, which broke the story, had this to say about it:
The idea is similar to Imagine Entertainment’s adaptation of the “The Dark Tower” series. Imagine partners Brian Grazer and Ron Howard had planned to do something over both theatrical and television, but ended up sticking with one feature film, which Sony will release later this year.
