THE BOOK OF LIFE 2: Animated Sequel In The Works

The Book Of Life

Reel FX Planning Follow-Up To The Book Of Life

Reel FX Animation Studios is getting ready to make a sequel to its animated 2014 film The Book of Life.

Coming in the wake of the studio’s modestly profitable but critically reviled Free Birds, Life was regarded as an improvement over that film. It not only made $99 million against a budget of $50 million (netting a profit of just under that number), the movie also earned mainly positive reviews from critics who praised the quality of the animation. On top of this, it earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature Film.

It is unknown at this point if any of the original film’s cast will return for the sequel, but director Jorge R. Gutierrez is set to helm the planned follow-up. He is known for creating the animated series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. No release date has been offered for the follow-up at this point.

Comingsoon.net, the source of this story, quotes him as saying the following about it:

“The sequel grew from that and people asking what was gonna happen with the characters, what’s gonna happen to the gods?” Gutierrez said. “The sequel embraces all these things and, in a weird way, is a continuation of the story with everybody you love from the first movie. I am a big fan of romantic movies. I always want to find out what happens afterwards. That’s one question we will ask during the sequel.”
