Zak Penn Hints That The New Matrix Film Is Not A Remake
X-Men: The Last Stand screenwriter Zak Penn suggests that the proposed new installment of The Matrix franchise will remain within the continuity of the original trilogy.
The news comes just days after the existence of the project was disclosed. It’s been 14 years since the release of the last Matrix film, Revolutions, to theaters (an animated follow-up, titled The Animatrix, was an anthology that was released directly to video and DVD). The original 1999 film, of course, hardly needs an introduction, featuring Keanu Reeves in one of his most famous roles and introducing much of the world to the wonder of slow-motion action.
With plans for another movie coming so long after Revolutions, it was little wonder that many assumed the project was intended as a reboot. However, Penn, who is currently in negotiations to write the film, seemed to indicate that the movie is anything but.

“All I can say at this point is no one could or should REBOOT ‘The Matrix,’” Penn wrote. “People who know ‘Animatrix’ and the comics understand. Can’t comment yet except to say that the words ‘reboot’ and ‘remake’ were from an article. Let’s stop responding to inaccurate news. Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of ‘The Matrix’? Yes. Because it’s a brilliant idea that generates great stories.”
