THE MIST: TV Series To Draw From Fargo [Spike]

The Mist TV Adaptation To Take Creative Inspiration From Fargo

Spike TV‘s adaptation of Stephen King‘s The Mist is to take narrative influence from FX‘s Fargo series.

Like the Coen Brothers film-based Fargo, Spike’s production is not the first incarnation of the property. The horror novella was previously made into a feature film in 2007, but earned mixed reviews from fans and critics as it deviated from the story’s original ending.

Interestingly, executive producer Christian Thorpe has appeared to not take these criticisms into account for the show, as he recently revealed at the Television Critics Association’s press tour. Explaining his desire to bring in new characters as well as a new setting, he compared Spike’s take on The Mist to the FX drama in that it is based on another work but will do its own thing. Whether fans will respond positively to this decision remains to be seen.

Cbr.com reported this story and also quoted Thorpe as saying this:

“Internally, we talk about it as doing the ‘Fargo’ approach, where the movie and the TV show is the same, but it’s different,” he said. “It’s like a weird, twisted cousin to the original source material. Fans of the movie and of the book and of Mr. King’s work will certainly see elements from it. … We also, in order to develop it for TV and turn it into an ongoing series, took our own little detours here and there.”
