THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST: Mel Gibson Planning Sequel

Jim Caviezel The Passion of The Christ

Mel Gibson plans to make sequel to The Passion of the Christ. The Academy Award-winning director of Braveheart and Apocalypto intends to make a film telling the story of Jesus’ resurrection.

Reports claim that Gibson is interested in reuniting with Randall Wallace, who worked with him on Braveheart as a screenwriter, to bring the second part of the biblical story to the big screen. The first part, which portrayed the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus leading up and during the crucifixion, was told in the original Passion film in 2004 and proved to be extremely successful:

The original Passion of the Christ, which stars Jim Caviezel as Jesus, Maia Morgenstern as Mary and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalen, was a sizable box office hit, pulling in more than $611 million globally. It was scripted by Benedict Fitzgerald alongside Gibson himself.

According to the trade, Wallace is currently working on the screenplay for the Passion of the Christ sequel having recently reteamed with Gibson on the upcoming World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge. Scripted by Wallace and Robert Schenkkan, Hacksaw Ridge focuses on 1945’s three-month military assault Operation Iceburg, also known as the Battle of Okinawa. “Hacksaw Ridge” was the name given the location of a particularly brutal two-week confrontation wherein United States troops faced off against Japanese soldiers on the rocky cliffs of Okinawa.
