TOMB RAIDER (2018): Release Date Announced For Film

Alicia Vikander Tomb Raider

Warner Bros. Pictures and MGM give a release date for Tomb Raider. The two companies announced that the upcoming adaptation of the popular video game series will hit theaters on March 16th, 2018.

Starring The Danish Girl‘s Alicia Vikander, the movie is expected to be the first in a series set around the adventures of archaeologist Lara Croft. Both Warner Bros and MGM will distribute the film, with GK Films aiding in production.

Although Tomb Raider‘s release date was only announced today, the date has held by Warner Bros for a while now. Previously, it was believed that it was reserved for The Flash, but today’s news effectively put an end to such speculation:

Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (The Wave) will direct the film, which has a script by Transformers: The Last Knight scribe Geneva Robertson-Dworet.

The original Tomb Raider game was published in 1996 by the London-based video game company Eidos and became one of the most successful video games of the time. A reboot of the series, telling the origin of Lara Croft, was released in 2013 and sold over 5 million copies. The most recent game, titled Rise of the Tomb Raider, is available now for the Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC.

Paramount Pictures previously made two movies about the daredevil archaeologist on a series of global missions. The films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, starred Angelina Jolie and grossed a combined $432 million at the worldwide box office.
