TV Review: HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER: Season 2, Episode 11: She Hates Us [ABC]

Viola Davis Kelsey Scott How To Get Away With Murder

ABC‘s How To Get Away With Murder She Hates Us TV Show Review. How To Get Away With Murder: Season 2, Episode 11: She Hates Us capably builds on the momentum of last week’s episode.

While What Happened To You, Annalise? focused on Professor Keating’s (Viola Davis) struggle to get back on her feet, last Thursday’s show dealt with the Keating Five’s response to her return to the courtroom. After the events of preceding episodes, their reactions are unsurprisingly chilly.

Connor (Jack Falahee) and Michaela (Aja Naomi King) are about fed up with Annalise, while Laurel (Karla Souza) is conflicted about her feelings towards their boss. Bonnie (Liza Weil) and Frank (Charlie Weber), sensing Annalise’s vulnerability, attempt to keep the students from quitting, which is no small task after everything she has made them go through.

The one who is taking all this the hardest is Wes (Alfred Enoch), who spends most of the episode isolated from the others. Held against his will after making a suicide joke, Wes is forced to come to terms with his unresolved abandonment issues by Dr. Greenlee (Catherine Bruhier). Within the relatively short amount of time she is on-screen, Bruhier is able to turn in a compelling performance as an authority figure who starts off as an obstacle for Wes to overcome and ends as a friend to hear him out.

As we continue to learn about Annalise’s connection to Wes, we see that she wasn’t always the hardened attorney she is (or presents herself as, at least) today. Far from being the cynical opportunist viewers think they’ve come to know so well, flashbacks reveal that she went out of her way to help Wes’s mother Rose (Kelsey Scott) when no one else would. Granted, new information showing she did for some convoluted, self-serving reason might to come light in future episodes, but for now, it appears she was just trying to be a decent person.

In the eyes of her students, however, whatever good she may have done is in the past. Things build, and will undoubtedly continue to, such a head that Connor, Michaela and Laurel all quit, leaving even Annalise shocked. Frank reassures her that they’ll be back, but she, like viewers, is not so sure, leaving us to ponder until Thursday to find out whether the Keating Five will return on How To Get Away With Murder.
